What is: SHALLOW WATER BLACKOUT?

Shallow Water Blackout is Real!   Please don't encourage your little ones to hold their breath too long! Excessive breath holding can be extremely dangerous so please do not encourage your little ones to see how far they can swim across the pool without breathing.  This is one of the reasons why in ISR lessons we teach children to swim 3-4 seconds and then rollback to float. This way your child will have sufficient breath and learn to be safe while swimming.

    1. Yes Cherisse, it is terrifying and very real. This is why we do not encourage children to hold their breath for excessive periods of time. 4-5 seconds is sufficient and then a breath is needed.

  2. I never know this. Is this possible with adults as well?

    1. Yes it is. An adult's lungs can hold more air so they can hold their breath for longer periods of time, but it is dangerous to hold your breath for an excessive period of time.

  3. This is very interesting... I did not know this could happen. Are adults at risk for this as well?
